A note from Anna Waugh, Assistant Director of MPC
Fifteen years ago, I joined a small nonprofit with big dreams of connecting people to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. What started as a scrappy idea has grown into Mississippi Park Connection—a vibrant force that now channels nearly $2 million each year into our local national park and engages tens of thousands of people with the Mississippi River.
Being part of this journey has truly been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Along the way, I’ve made lifelong friends—human, plant, and animal—and witnessed firsthand the power of people coming together to protect and celebrate this special place. But as the saying goes, “you can’t step in the same river twice,” and I will be leaving my role at Mississippi Park Connection at the end of August to focus on the next adventure life has in store.
Working to bring people closer to nature and helping build stronger connections between communities and the river has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s been the most rewarding job I could have ever asked for. Every day, I’ve learned so much from the park’s volunteers, donors, and especially the National Park Rangers. Their dedication has deepened my appreciation for our public lands and reaffirmed my belief in the strength and spirit of the United States. The support people have shown for this park—whether it’s pulling buckthorn, advocating for the river, or simply enjoying its beauty—has constantly inspired me.
I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to meet and work with so many of you who care deeply about the Mississippi River. The stories we’ve shared, the students whose lives we’ve touched, and the ecosystems we’ve helped restore have shaped me into the person, community member, and leader I am today. It’s been an honor to be a part of something so meaningful.
Although I’m leaving my role at MPC, I will continue to be an ardent advocate for both Mississippi Park Connection and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, especially as Ellen Reed and the team continue to drive the organization forward with strategic leadership and passion. My last day will be September 2nd, and in the coming weeks, I’ll be working closely with the amazing Mississippi Park Connection and National Park Service teams to ensure a seamless transition.
I’d love for you to join me at Picnic for the Park on August 28th to celebrate all we’ve built together. (Today is the last day to purchase tickets at the Early Bird rate!) And, if you can’t make it, I hope you’ll consider contributing in support of the park we’ve all worked so hard to nurture.
As I move forward, I’m excited for the next journey—and I can’t wait to reconnect with you downriver. I’d love to keep in touch!
With deep gratitude,
Anna Waugh
