The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) project team is restarting the Independent Monitoring program for 2025! We are searching for interested volunteers to help monitor the research plots. Volunteers are expected to dedicate at least one week per month, with the option of two weeks a month. Volunteers are expected to monitor once (~1-2 hours) during their scheduled week. This involves recording observations that need maintenance in their assigned zone and reporting them to staff. The extra eyes on the plots inform staff what maintenance needs to be performed during Crosby Crew sessions. These efforts make plots easier and safer for researchers and conduct critical climate change research in the national park.
Find out what it takes to be an Independent Monitor! The virtual information session intended for interested monitors will be held on Monday, Jan 27th on Microsoft Teams. The meeting link will be emailed to registered participants before the event. New volunteers must attend the virtual session to participate in the in-person training session at Crosby Farm Regional Park on Saturday, Feb 1st.
Ongoing, at your convenience
The National Park Service has been collecting data on the habits and habitats of beavers throughout the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, and this is your chance to participate in the research! Have you ever seen trees with beaver bite marks or beaver lodges and dams? We want to know about it. Just visit parkconnection.org/beaver from your mobile device or click the button below!
