Pickerel Lake is an excellent location for beginners to learn about paddling. The program is also great for those who want to brush up on their paddling skills. National Park Service park rangers will be your guide on this outdoor adventure.

Paddlers will learn about the national park in the Twin Cities while practicing their paddling techniques. A floodplain forest and scenic bluffs surround Pickerel Lake. Bald eagles nest nearby, and sightings of river otters have happened here. There are abundant fish in the lake, and by mid-summer, lily pads dot the surface. Late summer events may be cancelled due to conditions at the lake.

Adaptive paddling equipment are available at this station. Examples include hand adaptions for individuals who can grip a kayak paddle but need added support, or specialized outriggers attached to boats to help with balance. Contact miss_info@nps.gov when you register. We request at least a two-week notice for requests.

Each registration includes a ONE SEAT in the selected kayak, paddle, and personal floatation device (PFD) rental from Paddle Share. Tandem kayak registration should be made with a partner to guarantee appropriate passenger capacity. For your safety, DO NOT book a seat in a tandem kayak as a single individual person.

Events happen rain or shine. Programs are cancelled due to heavy rain or lightning. Decisions are made at least two hours before the scheduled program time. Be prepared for the weather and bring sun protection, insect repellant, rain gear, snacks, and water. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. Do not leave valuables in your car.

Due to staffing limitations, we cannot accommodate personal boats.

The program is appropriate for individuals who can physically maneuver a kayak on water.

Attendees must be 18+. A person under 18 years old may attend if they are in a tandem kayak with an adult from the same household.

Parking: There is a free lot at the Lilydale Regional Park Picnic Shelter or street parking.
