The Big Sit: A Birding Celebration at Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Spring)

  • Mni Owe Sni / Coldwater Spring 5601 Minnehaha Park Drive South Minneapolis, MN, 55417 United States (map)

Join National Park Service rangers and fellow bird enthusiasts for a day of birding, learning, and community at this annual drop-in event. We’ll be stationed at Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Spring) to observe and document every bird we see or hear as part of the fall migration season.

What to Expect:

  • Ranger-led guided walks throughout the day to learn the significance of the area and to explore bird habitats and migration patterns.

  • Interactive activity table with hands-on learning tools for all ages.

  • Live bird monitoring and data collection—help us record sightings in eBird or iNaturalist.

  • Opportunities to learn from experienced birders and share your own tips and stories.

  • Public engagement—chat with curious visitors and help spread the joy of birding.

Whether you're a seasoned birder or just curious, this is a welcoming space for everyone: families, solo birders, and curious newcomers alike. If you can spot a bird, you're qualified to join the Big Sit! Drop-in anytime from 7am to 7pm— come for an hour or stay all day.

What to Bring:

  • Camp chair or blanket

  • Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages

  • Binoculars, spotting scope, or camera

  • Smartphone for birding apps

  • Sunscreen and layered clothing (mornings can be chilly, afternoons warm)
