History Cruise with Guest Speaker: Annette Atkins

  • Watergate Marina 2500 Crosby Farm Road Saint Paul, MN, 55116 United States (map)

Boarding begins at 5:30pm; boat leaves promptly at 6.

Enjoy a riverboat cruise on the spectacular Mississippi River and participate in a program led by the National Park Service and special guest speaker.

Annette Atkins, Professor Emerita of History, Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict, studies history looking for the stories that demonstrate the complexity of the past and of people’s lives. In her teaching and writing, rather than dates and memorization, she stresses time, imagination, and curiosity as the essential approaches to understanding the past.  She has published four books, the most recent is Creating Minnesota: A History from the Inside Out published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

On this National Park Service Mississippi River Cruise, we’ll use those skills to look with double vision at the River: seeing what we see now and seeing what we might have seen 250 or 150 or 50 years ago.  This River has been sacred space, transportation network, industrial corridor, scenic byway for different people at different times, sometimes for the same people and at the same time: Kaposia, a trading post, a military fort, a canoe landing, a bringer of strangers and dangers, the path of the promise and threat of change, the carrier and dasher of dreams.  Little Crow, Scott Campbell, Sarah Sibley, Sarah Christie, Eliza Winston, James and Mary Hill and John Ireland and his sister Mother Seraphine CSJ, various Pillsburys,  others, too.  How did their views and visions of and from the river vary?  What do those variations teach us about Minnesota then and about ourselves now?  These are some of the people we’ll meet and questions we’ll explore together.

In addition to gaining more knowledge from our guest speakers, participants will enjoy wildlife, scenic sunset views, and a bar.
