Enjoy a riverboat cruise on the spectacular Mississippi River and participate in a program led by the National Park Service and special guest Professor Mary Wingerd.
Mary Wingerd is Professor of History and Director of the Graduate Program in Public History at St. Cloud State University. She is the author of Claiming the City: Politics, Faith and the Power of Place in Saint Paul and North Country: The Making of Minnesota. Professor Wingerd will tell the stories of the people who made this length of river nationally significant.
A place of deep importance to the Dakota people, this stretch of river was frequented by fur traders, soldiers, and settlers -- it became a place shaped by their evolving relationships. On the banks of the river, a city was also born. Saint Paul grew from a unique blend of ethnic and cultural groups that made it into a city unlike any other. In Saint Paul, a different set of rules applied. Join Professor Wingerd to hear what they were and how it came to be.
In addition to learning about the lesser-known stories of the Mississippi, participants will enjoy wildlife, scenic sunset views, and a cash bar.
