Park After Dark: Summer Solstice

  • Mni Owe Sni / Coldwater Spring 5601 Minnehaha Park Drive South Minneapolis, MN, 55417 United States (map)

Come explore the insects of the dark and see how they use light. Examine and identify insects attracted to light with Entomologist Jessica Miller, take a nighttime firefly hike with a National Park Service ranger, and think about the important role that light and dark play in the natural world. It's a great way to celebrate the Summer Solstice, one of the brightest, longest days of the year.

We will use a bright light and a UV light to lure in a wonderful variety of insects for observation. Many we frequently see over the season are indicators of healthy water. Moths are attracted to light and the Mni Owe Sni / Coldwater Spring area supports a stunning display of fireflies (a beetle).

Bring photos of insects on your phone if you would like help identifying something. You can also download the iNaturalist app to use for species identification. We will provide some guide books and insect information and can answer your questions!

This is a drop-in event and registration is not required. We hope to see you there!
