Just a short walk across the observation walkway from Mississippi Gateway Regional Park is the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park - offering a picturesque escape for nature enthusiasts. This park is excellent for biking, boating, fishing and geocaching with miles of paved and unpaved trails to choose. Pack some snacks and enjoy their summer concert series or enjoy some respite in one of several public pavilions scattered throughout the park - which also serve as great spots for family gatherings and summer outings. A vehicle permit is required to access the park, which can be purchased for a day or an entire year.

Nestled between Minnehaha Park and Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Coldwater Spring (Mni Owe Sni) holds immense historical and spiritual significance to Dakota people. This site served as a trading post and a neutral ground for indigenous groups to trade -thanks to the spring flowing year-round. Within walking distance to Bdote, the convergence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers and sacred birthplace of Dakota people,  today visitors can explore this historic site and walk its grounds. With a lush and abundant ecosystem, the spring has provided habitats for a variety of wildlife including turkeys, deer, and even coyotes! Birdwatching has also become popular here thanks to ongoing savannah and prairie restoration efforts by Mississippi Park Connection and the National Park Service. Don’t forget to bring your walking shoes and a camera to capture the beauty of this unique and historic location.

Crosby Farms Regional Park 

Located on the east bank of the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Crosby Farm Regional Park offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life. With its diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, and numerous recreational opportunities this park is a favorite among nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Mississippi West Regional Park

Mississippi West Regional Park offers spectacular views of the Mississippi River and is the only park within the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area with canoe campsites. As the newest addition to the national park corridor, this 273-acre park boasts rolling prairies, mature forests, and an array of wildlife. From deer and wild turkeys to bald eagles and migratory waterfowl, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to connect with nature.. 

This park features 2.36 miles of ADA-compliant paved trails, perfect for walks and  bike rides. During the fall, the parks pin oaks, cottonwoods, silver maples, and hackberry trees create a stunning display of autumn colors. In the winter, a portion of the trail is plowed for winter walking and visitors can enjoy snowshoeing off the beaten path. 

Canoe campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, These campsites are located on a small island adjacent to the park.. Each site is equipped with a cleared tent space, fire ring, picnic table, and access to a vault toilet -offering a peaceful and secluded camping experience.

Spring Lake Park Reserve

Spring Lake Park is a captivating oasis that invites visitors of all ages to experience the river from its unique vantage point. The Schaar’s Bluff Trailhead and picnic area provides a scenic overlook of the Mississippi River Valley. 

For nature and wildlife enthusiasts, Spring Lake Park Reserve is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Immerse yourself in hundreds of acres of restored prairie lands and observe the bison - yes real bison - that have newly arrived at their 150 acre fenced home right on the park - thanks to the support of Mississippi Park Connection and the National Park Service.  Throughout the year, the bison herd may travel to areas throughout the park and are free to roam within each area. It may be difficult to see them at times, so check the park’s website for the most updated information on their whereabouts and bison viewing rules. 

Thrill-seekers can check out the park's exhilarating archery ranges along the trails. Challenge your archery skills as you surround yourself in the bounty of the Mississippi River. For those seeking a calmer and more family friendly experience, picnic shelters, bonfires, and a playground is readily available for use. 

Are you looking  into gardening but you don’t have any yard space? Rent seasonal individual garden plots and join the community garden at Spring Lake Park Reserve. Just a short drive  south of the Twin Cities, Spring Lake Park Reserve is a must-visit daytime destination.
