Winter Trails Day is an annual winter festival where people of all ages can discover an activity that transforms their winter in to a season of joy.

We want to make sure you have the BEST experience, whether it's your first time or you come back every year.

All equipment will be provided, with outdoor enthusiasts on hand for demonstrations and assistance for you to try ice-fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, kayak racing, winter hiking, archery, camp games, and more.

Here are a few tips to enhance your day at Fort Snelling State Park:

Dress for the weather and wear layers

As of today, the forecast for January 11 is sunny but a little on the chilly side (18 degrees). We all know this could change, so watch the weather and dress appropriately. Wool socks, toe warmers, and winter boots are essential for keeping your feet warm. If you don't have snowpants, wear a base layer, long underwear, or leggings under activewear pants. Gloves under mittens with a hand warmer will keep your fingers warm and nimble for activities. A warm layer under your winter coat, like a fleece or sweatshirt, will keep you toasty for longer, enabling you to stay and enjoy all of the day's activities. And don't forget to protect your ears and trap your body heat in with a cozy hat!

Bring a water bottle

Staying hydrated is still necessary even when it's not hot outside. Bring a reusable water bottle full of water to quench your thirst in between trying new sports and to avoid purchasing a plastic water bottle onsite. Water fountains are located at the park office and Visitor Center.

Bring a friend

Outdoor winter experiences are best when shared. Invite a friend or family member to join you in discovering a new winter activity this season. Furry friends are welcome, too, as long as they stay on a 6 ft leash and you pick up after them :)

Check in at the registration table first!

In order to participate in any activity, you will need to sign a waiver. This includes youth, too, so bring the whole family. Signing a waiver also gets you a ticket for free hot cocoa ;)

Check out the map to make sure you don't miss anything

Activities are spread out all over Snelling Lake Beach. Maps will be displayed at each station. Some activities, like guided winter snowshoe hikes, are scheduled at particular times so make sure you know when they're happening.

Fuel up and stay a while

There will be hours worth of activities for you to try. That's why we're offering free hot cocoa and s'mores to help you stay warm. For extra fuel, be sure to visit the Weenie Wagon food truck, offering vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options in addition to loaded hot dogs and mac-n-cheese. The Weenie Wagon is donating 10% of all proceeds to Mississippi Park Connection to support the Mississippi River!

Explore the park

Now that you've paid for parking, check out the rest of Fort Snelling State Park. You can walk along the banks of the Mississippi River, hike around Pike Island, or stop by the visitor center to see the interpretive exhibits and warm up by the fire.

A note about bathrooms:

Accessible portapotties will be available on the grounds for Winter Trails Day. Flush toilets at the park office and the visitor center are available year-round and are wheelchair accessible.
